Effect of the Continuous Application of Herbicides on the Growth of Radish and Weeds

Abstract
Pot and field experimental results conducted applying with a number of herbicides continuously for three sequent radish crops in 1972 were summarized as follows;
1. Lorox applied as a pre-emergence treatment decreased the yield of radish giving a phytotoxicity to the crop after it¢¥s emergence and showed a residual toxicity to the following crop. When an excess dose of the herbicide was applied, the crop was completely damaged.
2. M.O seemed to be a relatively safe herbicide to radish showing no phytotoxicity to the crop even with a heavy application of it, ten times of usual dose, and leaving no residual effect on the sequent crop. Nasso and P.C.P. also showed little residual toxicity to the sequent crop when the same heavy dose was applied.
3. It seemed that the disappearance of residual toxicity of herbicides applied with a heavy dose of them was quickened in the soil limed.
4. A continuous application of herbicides modifies the species of weeds in the field, for instance, the continuous application of Lorox increases cereals instead of wide leaves.
